Understanding how the material behaves over time helps you make smarter decisions about upkeep — and avoid costly repairs down the road.

Fiberglass is made from woven glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix, which gives it strength and flexibility. Over time, however, the gelcoat — the outer protective layer — can oxidize, crack, or blister if neglected. Regular maintenance keeps that protective layer intact and preserves both the appearance and structural integrity of your hull.

Cleaning and Washing: The Foundation of Boat Maintenance

Frequent washing is the single most effective thing you can do to extend the life of your boat. After every outing, especially in saltwater, rinse the hull thoroughly with fresh water. Salt crystals are abrasive and can work into small surface cracks over time.

For routine cleaning, use a marine-specific soap rather than household detergents. Household cleaners often contain harsh chemicals that strip the gelcoat’s protective wax layer. Work from top to bottom, and pay close attention to areas around fittings, cleats, and waterline stains where grime tends to accumulate.

Addressing blisters early — by grinding out the affected area, allowing it to dry thoroughly, and applying an epoxy barrier coat — is far less expensive than dealing with widespread delamination.

Also check for stress cracks, particularly around hardware mounting points, transoms, and the keel area. Hairline cracks in the gelcoat are often cosmetic, but cracks that run deeper into the laminate need professional assessment.

Seasonal Storage and Winterization Tips

Proper storage at the end of the boating season protects your investment and reduces the work needed to get back on the water in spring. Before storing, give the hull a thorough wash and apply a fresh coat of wax. Drain all water from livewells, bilges, and any plumbing systems to prevent freeze damage.

If storing on a trailer, check that the bunks or rollers are positioned to support the hull evenly. Uneven support over a long winter can cause stress and deformation in the fiberglass. If possible, store the boat under cover or use a breathable, UV-resistant cover that allows moisture to escape rather than trap it.

For boats stored in the water year-round, a quality antifouling bottom paint applied annually prevents marine growth from attaching to the hull, which protects performance and reduces drag.
